Create where the mountains meet your imagination
At Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, the Department of Art & Design offers a vibrant, close-knit community where creative voices thrive. Small classes, dedicated mentorship, and access to professional studios empower students to grow as artists, designers, and changemakers.
Blend hands-on studio work with interdisciplinary exploration—linking art to environmental studies, Indigenous knowledge, and digital tools. Whether you're focused on graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, or painting, you’ll build a portfolio grounded in innovation and inspired by place.
Majors include Communication Design, with an emphasis on visual storytelling and digital media, and Studio Art, covering painting, ceramics, sculpture, and more. A K–12 Education track prepares future art teachers. Enhance any major with a minor in Art History or Studio Art, or gain experience with our Museum Management certificate.
Students also expand their learning through internships with local artists, design firms, and museums, as well as study abroad opportunities that bring global context to creative work.
Graduates become designers, educators, museum professionals, art directors, and practicing artists. Many continue on to top graduate programs.
