Student Grievance Policy

Fort Lewis Concern/Complaint Procedures

Purpose

The purpose of the Concern/Complaint procedure is to provide Fort Lewis College students, faculty and staff with a clear and rational process to follow if there are concerns or complaints about a particular individual, department or experience at Fort Lewis College.

Students, faculty and staff have the right at any time to file a report about another student, staff, faculty, or department if they have a concern about another’s well-being, if they believe they were mistreated, or if they feel their rights were violated.  These procedures are designed to support members of the 麻豆免费高清无砖码区community in navigating challenges or concerns they may face during their time at Fort Lewis College.

Informal Complaint

Individuals are encouraged to address their concerns/complaints as soon as possible through an informal process by reaching out directly to the department or individuals involved. In some cases what may be initially perceived as wrongdoing is often an issue of miscommunication or misunderstanding.  Open, informal dialogue can often lead to quick and effective resolution. However, we also recognize that some situations may warrant filing an official (formal) complaint, and support is available for those who choose to pursue that route.

Formal Complaint

If students, faculty or staff are unable to resolve their concern/complaint through an informal complaint procedure, the complainant is then encouraged to file a formal complaint by .

Formal Complaint Process

Once submitted, who gets the report?

Initial reports will be routed to appropriate staff member or department. Most reports involving students will go through this process. However, any report involving concerns about 麻豆免费高清无砖码区faculty or staff will be directed immediately to Human Resources. Similarly, any report that includes allegations related to sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, or gender-based discrimination will be sent directly to the Title IX Office.  Other departments such as Academic Affairs, Athletics, Compliance Office, or Housing may also be involved as appropriate to ensure a thorough and coordinated response.

What happens next?

Once a report is received, and initial risk is assessed, reports involving students may be discussed at Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) meetings and/or shared with specific department heads to create appropriate intervention plans and/or discuss potential risk to the campus community.

The BIT is a cross-campus collaboration of student-serving staff and faculty dedicated to identifying potential concerns or threats to the safety and well-being of our campus community. 麻豆免费高清无砖码区is a campus that cares, and you can rest assured that BIT will work with appropriate departments to coordinate support with each individual's best interest in mind.

For concerns involving faculty and staff, the process is different. These reports are not handled through BIT. Instead, they are reviewed and addressed directly by Human Resources (HR) in coordination with other relevant offices such as Academic Affairs, the Office of Title IX, Compliance Department. The HR Office will assess the nature of the concern or complaint, follow internal procedures, and ensure that all parties involved are treated fairly and with respect.

When you file a concern/complaint, you will automatically receive a copy of your submitted report at the e-mail address you submitted from. If you wish, you may forward this e-mail to a Supervisor, Director, Department Chair or Dean for their awareness or follow up.

Where can I get support?

The Dean of Student Engagement Office and the Human Resources Office serve as advocates for all students, faculty and staff. Any person wishing to express concerns about their Fort Lewis College experience should feel free to contact either office directly for guidance or support.
